See the links above for more information about our technology and treatment results.
The photos below show leaves immediately after treatment, the
objective being to wilt the green leaves (not incinerate them).
Thumb prints should be visible after pressing a treated leaf between
thumb and forefinger.
Watch for our newsletter,
where we will be covering many aspects of using our equipment, upcoming
innovations, and principles and techniques of thermal vegetation
management and flaming for weed control.
We also want to get feedback about your weed control needs and your experiences with and questions about using thermal methods!

Mid-size Models
Push Cart
Easily maneuverable, two-wheeled cart with liner-coated chassis and
tubular steel handle. Well suited to small areas and jobs for concrete
and brick pavers, gravel areas, paths, trails, driveways and many other
situations where non-selective and non-chemical weed control is needed.
Easy to store, transport, set up, and use.
Insulated Sunburst Thermal Deck™
is 36" long x 24” wide with propane manifold and burners. Propane
system utilizes a refillable 2.5-10 gallon tank (supplied by customer),
a handle-mounted control valve with variable pilot setting,
quick-shutoff valve and propane regulator. Low-volume water system is
from a seven gallon water tank with 12 volt pumping system and switch-activated water spray. Manual burner ignition start-up using a typical butane lighter.
Wagon
Larger than the push cart, this four-wheeled model includes an insulated 24" wide x 42" long Sunburst Thermal Deck™ with propane manifold and burners mounted to a 6' long steel chassis with rotating front steering assembly and pull handle.
Propane system utilizes a refillable 2.5-10 gallon tank (supplied by
customer), a handle-mounted control valve with variable pilot setting,
quick-shutoff valve and propane regulator. Low-volume water system is
from a seven gallon water tank with 12 volt pumping system and switch-activated water spray. Manual burner ignition start-up using a typical butane lighter.
Custom Configurations
The Sunburst R&D team is comprised
of vegetation management, engineering and fabrication professionals
that understand the unique requirements of the wide variety of settings
in which our equipment can be used.
We have designed and manufactured a number of custom units for large-scale applications ranging from roadsides, railroads, blueberry fields, orchards, water canal rights-of-way, and wetlands in collaboration with University researchers, farmers, state transportation departments, etc. to provide equipment for their specific operational requirements.
The following represents the type, scale and diversity of custom flaming equipment that has been developed by Sunburst for thermal weed control applications:
Three-point Hitch
A Sunburst 3-point hitch unit, built for right-of-way maintenance in California irrigation district operations:
Articulated Boom
Boom-mounted
equipment is very versatile and can be used in treatment areas
to the side and away from the vehicle. Shown below is an
articulated boom with three-point hitch attachment mounted to a
tractor. Other types of vehicles, such as flat-bed trucks, can
also be used to carry thermal equipment attached to articulated booms.
Trailer
Thermal units
mounted onto trailers with tongue hitch attachments are useful for
applications where the treatment area can be driven over, such as
between rows of crops, vines and orchard trees, and can be pulled
behind tractors, trucks and ATVs.
Railroad Configurations
Sunburst has worked with railroads to
design and build equipment for ballast areas from the middle of the
track and on both sides. The top photos show a high-rail
configuration with a hydraulic-operated center unit and independently
operated articulated booms for the sides. The photo below is of a
Sunburst thermal unit mounted to a ballast regulator, with a following
car that carries propane and water.
